The Journey through Lent
with the Gospel of Saint Mark

The Gospel of Saint Mark has been described as “a passion narrative with an extended introduction” (Martin Kähler).  On Palm Sunday we hear Mark’s Passion and, at the Easter Vigil his Resurrection narrative—with the most important verse missing!  This course will explore Mark’s gospel to deepen our understanding of Mark’s portrait of Jesus and his message.

January 25th     Temptation (1.12)
He said, “Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want (14:36)

February 8th   Transfiguration—Glimpses of the Resurrection (9:2-8)
“They were all amazed and glorified God, saying, ‘We have never seen anything like this!’” (2:12)

February 22nd   Conflict Stories: Challenging Authorities (11:15-19)
“The Pharisees went out and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.” (3:6)

March 8th  Faith and lack of faith
Jesus said to them, “Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes, and fail to see? Do you have ears, and fail to hear? And do you not remember? (8:18-19)

March 22nd  Living the death and resurrection of Jesus
He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel will save it.” (8.34-35)
